Internet Freedom Nonprofit Seeks Software Engineer (C Developer)

The Tor Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization advancing human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to work on the Tor network. This Software Engineer will be an integral part of the Network Team, a small group that maintains the software that runs behind the Tor network. The Network Team coordinates both synchronously and asynchronously via IRC, email, bug trackers, and some voice meetings.

A personal commitment to free and open source software, good communication and documentation skills, and passion for contributing to the greater good are all essential to succeeding in this position.

This is a full-time, remote position. Salary for this position is $110,000 USD/year and there is voluntary opt-in salary transparency for employees and contractors.

The Job

Summary

In this role, you will be part of the Tor Network Team. You will be paired with a mentor in the Tor problem space to familiarize yourself with the issues, and to develop and improve Tor Onion Services through technical specifications. Essential job functions: bug fixes, feature implementations, deep code diagnosis, writing and implementing network protocol changes, and code review with an eye toward security and portability issues.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ability to work in a self-directed and independent way, but not afraid to ask for help when you need it.
  • Comfortable working remotely, on a team that spans multiple time zones.
  • Proficiency working with the C programming language in a security-sensitive context.
  • Familiarity with the Rust programming language.
  • Experience with software profiling and network performance analysis.
  • Excellent communication and good documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Genuinely be excited about The Tor Project and its values!
  • Familiarity with FOSS software engineering practices (git, gitlab), merge-request based workflows.
  • Familiarity with privacy, network programming, distributed systems, security, and cryptography.
  • Strong remote work and time management skills.
  • Experience with reading and writing technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with Tor's network architecture
  • Proficiency in English (verbal and written)
